“Candidates should prepare themselves interiorly for the future renunciation of goods and condition themselves for the service of all peoples, especially the poor.”

  • Interested Catholic men 18 to 40 years of age, living in New York state or in the New England states, and feel the Lord may be calling them to follow Him in serving the poor after the example of St. Francis of Assisi

  • Non-Resident Program

  • Attending up to 6 Discernment Weekends each year are suggested to get to know other candidates, meet many Capuchin Franciscans and witness various ministries of the brothers

  • Spiritual Direction, involvement in parish and frequent reception of the Sacraments are strongly encouraged

  • Participate in a ministry to the poor

  • Candidates are encouraged to visit various friaries between Discernment Weekends for prayer, fraternal and ministerial experiences

  • If interested in applying for Postulancy, candidates are asked to do so by January of the year he plans to apply.

“The formation of Postulants aims primarily at completing their catechesis in the faith and includes an introduction to Liturgy, methods of prayer, Capuchin Franciscan instruction and an initial experience of apostolic work. It must also reinforce and promote human maturity, especially emotional maturity, and an ability to discern the signs of the times in light of the Gospel”
  • A resident year long program at St. Michael Friary, Brooklyn, NY, beginning in August

  • Living in a friary with professed Capuchin Franciscans

  • Attending daily prayers and meals and fraternal functions

  • Classes/workshops on religious life, Franciscan spirituality, the vows, etc. each morning

  • Ministry with the poor each afternoon

  • Visiting a number of friaries regularly in order to get to know many Capuchin Franciscans and their ministries

  • One year intense spiritual program in Allison Park, Pennsylvania

  • Receive the habit, cord, rosary and sandals

  • Emphasis on inner spiritual growth

  • Ministry to the poor during the week

  • Workshops with other religious groups

  • Lives with brothers from provinces in the United States, Canada and Australia

  • At the conclusion of the year temporary vows of poverty, chastity and obedience are professed

  • During this year the Novice decides if he is called to life as a brother or a priest in the Capuchin Franciscan Order

“Let the brothers, according to each one’s gifts and grace, apply themselves to a more profound study of sacred Scripture, spiritual theology, Liturgy and the history and spirituality of the Order; let them also exercise various forms of the apostolate as well as domestic work”


  • Complete a degree in theological studies either leading to the priesthood or service to the poor as a professed brother

  • Develop skills that will help him live our common life in a contemplative way while serving the church and world

  • Serve the wider community in ministry, e.g. hospitals, prisons, and schools, etc.

  • Use his summers to serve in a variety of ministries, including total immersion in another culture

  • Renew Simple Vows each year for a minimum of three and maximum of six years, leading to Perpetual Profession
